Match Preview: Nottinghamshire v Hampshire - Specsavers County Championship

Hampshire head to Welbeck to take on Nottinghamshire in the latest instalment of Specsavers County Championship action

Just one defeat from the opening five Specsavers County Championship matches, including a comfortable draw against a strong Yorkshire side last week, has seen Hampshire continue their good start to this year’s four-day campaign.

After a short break, Sam Northeast’s side return to action on Sunday against Nottinghamshire at Welbeck, in search of a second successive red-ball victory against the hosts this season.

Hampshire Squad:

A 13-man squad has been named for the trip to Newclose, with Kyle Abbott and Anuerin Donald both featuring alongside the final XI that earned a share of the points at Headingley.

Abbott, who missed that fixture with a calf niggle, is expected to return on Sunday and will be an important component to the bowling attack having picked up 19 wickets at an average of just 19.31 in his four appearances so far this season. Pace partner Fidel Edwards has also been excellent with the ball so far, claiming 26 scalps at just 17.96 apiece – good enough for third in the top wicket-takers tally.

James Vince and Liam Dawson remain unavailable for selection due to their international commitments with England.

The Opposition:

Nottinghamshire have had a difficult start to their 2019 campaign, succumbing to defeat in three of their opening four red-ball fixtures, including a 244-run loss when these two sides met at Newclose last month.

Steve Mullaney’s squad currently occupy bottom spot in Division One, despite picking up six points in a nail-biting draw against Warwickshire on Thursday, and they’ll be looking to secure their first four-day win of the season back on home soil this week.
