Match Preview: Yorkshire v Hampshire - Specsavers County Championship

Hampshire name 13-man squad to take on the champions

Touted as one of the toughest fixtures of the season, Hampshire make the trip to Specsavers County Championship Division One champions Yorkshire for their second match of the campaign.

James Vince’s side will have gained a significant amount of confidence from their strong performance against Yorkshire in September at the The Ageas Bowl, lost only after a brave attempt to manufacture a win during the rain-affected match late in the season.

Hampshire Squad:

Fast-bowler Reece Topley is the one omission from the last squad after suffering a fractured hand whilst batting in the first innings against Warwickshire. He is replaced in the squad by Brad Wheal with the 19-year old facing competition from Chris Wood and leg-spinner Mason Crane to replace Topley in Hampshire’s XI.

The match comes too soon for experienced opener Jimmy Adams, who is targeting a return from injury for Hampshire’s home fixture against Middlesex starting on Sunday 1 May.

The Opposition:

Yorkshire have named a 13-man squad, which includes new signing David Willey fresh from his exploits with England in the ICC T20 World Cup. He is joined in the squad alongside his England colleagues Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid.

Seamer Tim Bresnan continues his rehabilitation from a torn calf and England batsman Joe Root is rested after a long campaign with the national side.

Recent Form:

The hard-fought draw to Warwickshire in the opening match of the 2016 season means that Hampshire have now lost just one of their last eight first-class matches.

This fixture will be Yorkshire opening match of the new campaign with Andrew Gale’s side winning 11 of their 16 County Championship matches last season, losing just once.

What The Team Say:

Reece is bitterly disappointed about his injury, as we are. But it’s now an opportunity for someone else to come into the team and show us what they can do.

April is not an easy time to bat – everyone is trying to find some form in tough conditions. They are all good players and hopefully they will get some runs at Headingley.
