Meet....Joe Maiden, Hampshire Performance Analyst

Get to know the staff at the The Ageas Bowl

What are you responsible for within your role?

In simplistic terms, to make sure the Hampshire players have information on the opposition and to work out what we can do to give us the best chance of winning every match. It’s important for us to try and figure out how the opposition are going to play, how we can beat them in certain areas and then making sure we are meeting our objectives with our own performances.

During the season, what are your day-to-day activities?

During a game my job will be to ‘code’ matches. ‘Coding’ means that you have to record what happens on every ball of every match. This then needs to be sent to the ECB at the end of every game so it’s within my role to make sure that happens.  If I’m not coding I will be busy looking at future matches and preparing for those.

What do you do during the off-season?

I have moved more into coaching for the off-season - I’m running the Hampshire Juniors Bowling Development Group with Tommo {James Tomlinson}, alongside some specific fielding coaching with some of the Academy players and batting coaching with some of the EPP players. So I’m still really busy during the off-season!

What inspired you to become a Performance Analyst?

I enjoyed the Performance Analyst side of things whilst I was at university, I ended up doing my dissertation on it. I played a lot of cricket growing up so I always wanted to be involved in it somehow and if I couldn’t be involved in playing then to be involved in other aspects of it is the next best thing really.

Away from the The Ageas Bowl, do you have any hobbies and what do you like to do in your spare time?

When I get the chance, I like to play club cricket for Rockhampton and I also enjoy going to Villa Park to watch my football team Aston Villa play.

Interesting fact?

We didn’t have a 12th man away at Worcester in the Championship last season so I was sent on and I managed to take a catch!
