Monday Moments: Northeast At Newclose

Sam Northeast (133) scored a superb second innings century as we defeated Nottinghamshire in the County Championship at Newclose in May 2019

We’re kicking off each week in style as we celebrate a special moment from the 2019 season every Monday.

Hampshire headed to the Isle of Wight in late May 2019 to face Nottinghamshire in the County Championship and made the trip across the water in good form, having won 10 of their previous 12 matches in all competitions.

The match against the Trent Bridge side was the first First Class match staged on the island since 1962 and it didn't dissapoint.

Nottinghamshire decided to have a bowl on the first morning and eventually dismissed Hampshire for 310, with a handful of good contributions from Hampshire's batsmen, Weatherley (66) and Soames (44) put on 112 for the first wicket.

In reply Notts chalked up 239 all out - Hampshire's seam attack of Abbott, Edwards and Barker sharing nine wickets between them. Steven Mullaney (102) held together the innings but he was eventually dismissed by Ian Holland.

It was in Hampshire's second innings that they really started to turn the screw, but at one stage the scoreboard read 9-2 as both Weatherley and Soames - despite their success in the first innings - fell cheaply.

The two early dismissals brought Ajinkya Rahane and Sam Northeast to the crease. The pair put on 257 - Rahane made 119 and Northeast 133 - to effectively take the game away from Notts. Some middle-order hitting from Alsop (51*) and Ian Holland (39*) meant the visitors required 439 to win.

Abbott, Edwards and Barker again shared nine wickets as Nottinghamshire were bundled out for 194, Mason Crane sealing a 244-run win by dismissing Jake Ball.
