On This Day: Sunday League Tie With Worcestershire As Streak Takes Four

Heath Streak takes 4-56 on this day in 1995 as we tie with Worcestershire in the Sunday League

Hampshire Cricket's historian Dave Allen takes a look back on timely memorable moments in his ‘On This Day’ series.

Heath Streak (4-56) - Hampshire v Worcestershire, Sunday League, 25th June 1995

Hampshire came to Southampton and a meeting with Worcestershire in the Sunday League - on this day in 1995 - having lost five of their first six matches on their way to bottom place in the league that year.

Nonetheless the two teams conjured some real excitement from this afternoon. Hampshire batted first in a match limited to 39 overs per side and their youthful top three made a really good start, with Sean Morris (21) helping Paul Whitaker to open with 58, after which Whitaker and Keech shared a fine partnership of 158 although sadly they both fell within one scoring shot of a century.

Things rather fell away after that (James 21) but Hampshire posted 275-9.

Worcestershire’s captain Tom Moody set off at a furious pace despite losing Curtis and Haynes in single figures but they pushed on to 148-3 and a group of six Worcestershire batsmen hit between 12 and 30, while Moody went on to reach 108 before Maru had him caught by Heath Streak.

The latter returned figures of 4-56 including bowling Neal Radford (21) with two to win. Parvez Mirza couldn’t oblige and the match ended in a tie.
