Press Day Schools Challenge Hailed a Huge Success

150 students had the unique opportunity to interview a Hampshire player

Hampshire Cricket in the Community’s education programme has been hailed after a number of students from across the county took part in the first ever Hampshire Cricket Press Day Schools Challenge.

150 students from nine secondary schools had the unique opportunity to interview a Hampshire Cricket player during the Club’s annual Press Day at the The Ageas Bowl.

As part of The Schools Challenge, which was supported by All Out Cricket Magazine, the best article written from their interview with the Hampshire player will feature in one of the Club’s T20 programme’s this season.

Prior to the interviews, the students were given a talk from All Out Cricket Features Editor Ed Kemp, who gave his top tips for writing a perfect feature and Hampshire Cricket Press Officer Jamie Hopkins, who spoke about interview techniques.

Key first team players Jimmy Adams, James Vince and Michael Carberry were all in attendance for The Schools Challenge, which saw every attending student have the special opportunity to interview a Hampshire player.

Student from Wyvern School: “I loved meeting the players and it was a great experience. I want to pursue sports journalism as a career and I am eager to do anything more to get this job.”

Student from Calthorpe Park School: “Overall I had an amazing day and it has given me a good idea of what journalism is all about.”

Teacher from Costello School: “An excellent insight into the world of sports journalism. It demonstrated just how much effort students need to put in to make it in the editing/writing world of sports!”

Teacher from Oasis Mayfield: “Students are challenged to write and think creatively to better their literacy skills and sports knowledge through inspiring tasks.”

The Ageas Bowl Education Programme is delivered by Hampshire Cricket in the Community, official charity of Hampshire Cricket.
