Hampshire’s opener Tom Alsop (154) led a hugely encouraging batting display from the Second XI and bowler Brad Wheal (6-48) forced MCC Youth to follow on, before the match on the Nursery Ground was abandoned due to bad weather.

Hants declared on 402-8 when Andy Gorvin (51*) reached his half-century in the 87th over, and when MCC were all out for 227 runs, the home side were in a commanding position.

Wheal’s seventh wicket of the match helped reduce MCC to 182-4, the away side leading by just seven runs when the match result was compromised by heavy rain.

The formidable opening pair of Alsop (154) and Joe Weatherley (39) hit 94 before the latter was run out by Joe Barrett; Weatherley had looked in good touch, finding the boundary six times.

Lewis McManus (34) scored steadily and assisted Alsop towards his ton, before the wicket-keeper batsmen was clean bowled by A Hazeldine (4-56), leaving Hampshire on 175-2.

Ben Duggan (25) and Jake Goodwin (27) made ground with the bat before being dismissed by A Hazeldine (4-56) and Ryan Buckley (3-37) respectively, both caught behind by wicket-keeper Saf Imtiaz.

Andy Gorvin (51*) reached his fifty, after Jacob Lintott had produced a speedy 46 off 24 runs, and Hampshire declared on 402-8, satisfied with a superb first innings.

Wheal claimed the wicket of opening batsman Saf Imtiaz (0) in the first over of MCC’s innings, sending out a message of intent, as Alsop took the catch.

Half-centuries from James Harris (51) and Marc Lezar (87) chipped away at Hampshire’s strong total but Wheal seriously troubled the middle order - a formidable spell from the young bowler benefiting McManus, who gloved four edges consecutively.

Finishing on 227 all out, and trailing by 175 runs, MCC followed on.

Joe Weatherley (1-40) removed Imtiaz (27) and Steve Warner claimed the wicket of Harris (44) as he approached fifty, before Brad Wheal (1-44) took his seventh wicket of the match to help reduce MCC to 182-4.

The match was abandoned shortly after the away side had surpassed a fine 402-run total from Hampshire, who were in a commanding position when the players left the field.
