Simon Lee To Join Hampshire As Head Groundsman

Lee heads to the The Ageas Bowl after spending the last 18 years at Taunton

Hampshire Cricket are delighted to announce that Simon Lee has been appointed as the club’s new Head Groundsman.

Lee, who joins Hampshire having spent 18 years with Somerset, replaces Nigel Gray who came out of retirement for the 2019 season following the departure of Karl McDermott to Lord’s last winter.

The former Somerset Head Groundsman has consistently been recognised for the standard of his pitches at Taunton, receiving his most recent ECB accolade at last season’s Business of Cricket Awards for the ‘Best One-Day Pitch’ alongside McDermott – an award Lee also picked up in 2015.

Nigel has been outstanding as ever this year and our thanks go to him for all his hard work over the last 12 months. Looking ahead, we are thrilled to welcome Simon to the club and he arrives with an excellent reputation and is very well respected across the game – we’re looking forward to Simon beginning his new role here at the The Ageas Bowl.

Giles White, Director Of Cricket

Lee oversaw the first men’s ODI to played at Taunton in 20 years earlier this summer as the venue hosted three ICC Cricket World Cup fixtures, whilst he was integral to the success of Taunton’s first ever T20I in 2017.
