Somerset on Top Despite Carberry & Vince Fifties

Liam Dawson hit 48 in his 100th first-class game for Hampshire

Half-centuries from Michael Carberry (59) and James Vince (60) were the highlight for Hampshire on day one, but it's Somerset who take the advantage after day one of the LV= County Championship match at Taunton.

New Zealander Luke Ronchi equalled a Somerset wicketkeeping record by taking seven catches in Hampshire’s first innings, which saw them subside from a promising 172 for three to 240 all out, Jamie Overton claiming four for 37 and Jim Allenby three for 54.

The only previous Somerset wicketkeeper to have claimed seven victims in a first class innings was Rob Turner against Northants at Taunton in 2001. His dismissals were all catches too.

Despite half-centuries from Michael Carberry and James Vince, Hampshire fell short of a par score. By the close Somerset had replied with 147 for no wicket, Marcus Trescothick unbeaten on 67 and Tom Abell 70 not out.

The day had begun well for the visitors after they had lost the toss and been inserted on a green looking pitch. Carberry and Jimmy Adams put together a stand of 49 for the first wicket before Adams was run out by a direct hit from Jamie Overton attempting a third run, having hit Lewis Gregory through the covers.

Vince looked in good form and the positive Carberry had hit 11 fours in moving to 59 before aiming a loose cover drive at a wide ball from Jamie Overton and giving Ronchi his first catch.

Just before lunch Vince moved to a 66-ball half-century, with 9 fours. But the afternoon session belonged to Somerset as Allenby pouched Vince at first slip off Gregory for 60 and then picked up three wickets in the space of six balls himself.

We lost our way after a good start through a mixture of good Somerset bowling and poor shot selection.

Some of our batsmen got starts and were not ruthless enough to go on to big scores, which was disappointing. Now we have to put day one behind us and come out fighting tomorrow morning because there is a lot of cricket left in the game.

Will Smith, Sean Ervine and Adam Wheater all edged Allenby’s innocuous looking medium pace to Ronchi, the last of them for a first ball duck. Suddenly Hampshire were 176 for six and in trouble.

Craig Overton had Ryan McLaren caught behind for 18 before his twin brother wrapped up the tail, sending back Gareth Berg, Mason Crane and Liam Dawson, who contributed a battling 48, in the space of nine deliveries.

The dismissal of Crane second ball gave Ronchi a share in the record. But his hopes of beating it were dashed when Dawson got a bottom edge onto his stumps.

With the sun out, Somerset captain Trescothick, who has just agreed a new one-year contract at the age of 39, and opening partner Abell set about making inroads into the Hampshire total.

Abell outscored his illustrious partner to reach an elegant half-century off 59 balls, with 10 fours, going to 50 with successive boundaries off McLaren.

Trescothick brought up the 100 partnership with a flashing square cut for four off McLaren in the 26th over and moved to his own half-century two overs later, having faced 96 balls and hit ten boundaries.
