Vitality Blast Countdown: Ellis Lights Up Quarter-Final

2022 Vitality Blast champions Hampshire Hawks begin their 2023 T20 campaign at Taunton against Somerset on Wednesday 24th May.

We are counting down the days until the Hawks’ title defence begins and today marks 72 days until then. Australian bowler Nathan Ellis wears the number 72 shirt and one of his finest performances in last year’s competition came in the quarter-final, as he took figures of 3-4 against Birmingham Bears at Edgbaston.

Having won the toss, James Vince elected to bat first. He and Ben McDermott put on a 93-run opening stand with the latter top scoring for the Hawks with a score of 61. Joe Weatherley also added 47 runs as they set a score of 186/6.

That meant that the hosts came in knowing a score of 187 would see them progress to Finals Day.

However, the Hawks bowling attack quickly took charge, bowling the hosts out for just 82 in the 14^th over. Brad Wheal and James Fuller took figures of 2-9 and 4-17 respectively, while Nathan Ellis took three wickets at the cost of just four runs.

Ellis bowled just nine balls – eight of which were dot balls – and took the final two Bears’ wickets to seal the deal for Hampshire Hawks.
