Weatherley Knock Seals 2nd XI Win Over Glamorgan

Batsman Joe Weatherley scored 79 off 96 balls at Newport, as Hampshire defeated Glamorgan by 4 wickets

Batsman Joe Weatherley’s (79) assured knock sealed a four-wicket victory for Hampshire Second XI over Glamorgan in the Second XI Trophy after bowler Brad Taylor (3-28) had set up the win at Newport.

Weatherley scored 79 runs off 96 balls, hitting nine boundaries to help Hants surpass a 247-run target set by Glamorgan, who were pegged back by the bowling of Taylor and loan signing Gavin Griffiths.

It was Griffiths who halted the home side's early progress by removing opening batsman J Lawlor on 13, but Glamorgan recovered and climbed beyond 100.

Taylor took three wickets in as many overs to put Hampshire back in control, including Smith and Carlson with successive deliveries.

Weatherley took a wicket of his own, finding an edge from Brown to reduce Glamorgan to 136-5, then Griffiths and Taylor completed the job, as the visitors posted 246-8 after their 50 overs.

Chasing 247 for victory, Weatherley and Dearden made steady progress with the bat, moving to 56 before losing their first wicket - Dearden on 32 runs.

Taylor joined Weatherley in the middle and the two leading figures in the triumph batted with confidence and control to push Hants past 150 without further loss.

When Weatherley was run out at 153-2 though, the visitors experienced a series of setbacks, as the capable trio of Taylor, Jake Goodwin and Tom Scriven fell in quick succession to leave Hants 173-5 after 36 overs.

Fraser steadied the innings and his stability carried Hampshire from 192-6 to 248 without another wickets falling, as wicket-keeper batsman Ed Ellis crucially added 19 runs, remaining unbeaten at the crease.
