Women's Regional T20 Competition Named Charlotte Edwards Cup

The new Women's Regional T20 Competition, which gets underway this weekend, has been named the Charlotte Edwards Cup

The ECB have today announced that the new Women's Regional T20 Competition has been named the Charlotte Edwards Cup.

The competition, which kicks off this weekend, sees the eight women's regional teams go head-to-head with each team playing each other throughout a competitive tournament.

Charlotte Edwards CBE is England Women's most-capped player and captained England between 2006-2016, leading the team to three Ashes wins, an ICC Women's World Cup and an ICC Women's T20 World Cup.

She played in the first-ever international T20 match, against New Zealand at Hove in 2004, and is England Women's leading run-scorer in IT20 cricket.

Edwards is now Head Coach of regional side, Southern Vipers, who will take part in the tournament, whilst she is also Head Coach of Southern Brave in The Hundred this summer.

It's a huge honour to have my name attached to the competition. The regional players who'll take part in the competition are at the beginning of such an exciting journey, and the pathway has progressed and developed so far since I was in their position.

I hope, like we saw with the Rachael Heyhoe Flint, that players from across the eight teams can continue to impress at regional level and push hard for international selection. The new domestic set-up is a real game-changer for women's cricket in this country and I'm really proud to be a part of it.

Charlotte Edwards

It’s powerful to be able to connect the women’s regional game with such iconic figures in women’s cricket. Last year we named the 50 over competition after Rachael Heyhoe Flint, and now this. There are numerous individuals who have served English cricket with distinction who we could have chosen, but we felt with Lottie's relevance to the T20 game and her excellence as a player in the international T20 format, it was most fitting for the competition to take her name.

Lottie is a true legend of English cricket. She led from the front as a player and she's now giving back to the game as a Coach, helping our domestic players have the best chance of potentially going on to represent the national side. The players who will compete in the Charlotte Edwards Cup can now realistically aspire to stepping up to compete on the international stage, and that's truly exciting.

Clare Connor, ECB Managing Director of Women's Cricket

The Charlotte Edwards Cup is set to commence on Saturday 26th June with the eight teams split into two groups of four and each team playing three home and three away matches during the group stage.

Central Sparks will be Southern Vipers opponents in the competition curtain-raiser at Edgbaston, followed by matches against Lightning (Saturday 2rd July) and South East Stars (Saturday 10th July). Central Sparks (Wednesday 25th August) will be the opponents for the second cluster of competition fixtures, whilst contests against South East Stars (Saturday 28th August) and Lightning (Monday 30th August) complete the competition’s group stage.

Finals Day is then scheduled to take place on Sunday 5th September.
