Charlotte Edwards Cup Rewind: Wyatt’s Walloping Sends Vipers To Finals Day

Danni Wyatt thrashed her way to 35 off just 16 deliveries in the final group stage match of the Charlotte Edwards Cup

With the 2022 season now firmly in the rear-view mirror, we're taking a look back at some of the performances that caught the eye throughout Southern Vipers' successful Charlotte Edwards Cup campaign.

The Platinum Jubilee was celebrated in style as The Ageas Bowl played host to a thrilling double header of T20 action, as the Vipers took on their arch enemies Northern Diamonds, before an el clasicoast clash between Hampshire Hawks and Sussex Sharks in the evening.

The Vipers made one change from their previous battle against Thunder, with Georgia Elwiss making way for Nancy Harman.

The Diamonds called correctly at the toss, and elected to bat first.

Charlie Dean struck with two early wickets, but the Diamonds fought back to a strong total of 141.

A win for the Vipers would see them straight through to the Charlotte Edwards Cup final at Northampton.

Enter Danni Wyatt.

No need for someone of her quality to get her eye in, Wyatt smashed the first ball to the cover boundary, before dispatching the second in similar fashion.

She tried again with the third but didn’t time it, before she danced down to new recruit Linsey Smith and pierced the off side boundary once more.

After just the 13 runs off the first over, Wyatt continued the onslaught, dispatching Scotland’s Rachel Slater for two fours off her opening deliveries, and the Vipers had put 21 runs on the scoreboard after just eight balls.

England’s Nat Sciver was then brought into the attack to weather the storm for the Diamonds, but when Wyatt gets going, it takes something incredible to stop her.

The opener carved the all-rounder through point for four more, and followed it up with a pull shot to the square leg boundary, and the Vipers’ 30 was brought up after just three overs of the reply.

Wyatt used her feet once again in the next over, smacking the experienced Katie Levick over cover – her eighth four of the innings – before she aimed for the boundary again, but could only find Smith at point.

Her innings set the tone for the Vipers, and the target was chased down with ten balls remaining and six wickets in hand, as the Vipers finished the group stage unbeaten from their six matches, and straight through to the final at Northampton.
