The Hundred group stage has now come to an end in both Men’s and Women’s competitions. Southern Brave and Trent Rockets will battle it out for a chance to face Oval Invincibles in the Women’s Final, while the Rockets topped the Men’s group – with Manchester Originals and London Spirit set to meet in the Eliminator.
Many Hampshire and Southern Vipers players have appeared in this year’s competition so far, putting in some impressive performances along the way.
Southern Brave
Men (7th place): James Vince (C), James Fuller, Joe Weatherley, Ross Whiteley
James Vince’s Brave side struggled to reach the heights they managed in 2021, when they were crowned the inaugural champions. This year they have had to settle for seventh place having won just three games.
The skipper started with a bang as he made a classy 71* in the win over Welsh Fire, while Ross Whiteley scored a healthy 150 runs in total – including a half century in the defeat to London Spirit – and took a marvellous catch in Cardiff.
All-rounder James Fuller was productive with the ball, leading the attack in wickets with nine.
Joe Weatherley didn’t make an appearance in the competition.
Women (2nd place): Anya Shrubsole (C), Georgia Adams, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Freya Kemp, Ella McCaughan, Tara Norris, Carla Rudd, Paige Scholfield, Danni Wyatt
In the Women’s competition, the Brave have continued on from the form they showed last year, only missing out on top spot by net run rate.
England international Danni Wyatt has scored 162 runs thus far – putting her seventh in the competition standings – as part of a destructive opening pair with Smriti Mandhana. Georgia Adams, Freya Kemp and Maia Boucher have also been useful with the bat all with totals over 50.
Brave captain Anya Shrubsole has five wickets to her name, while Lauren Bell – who recorded figures of 4/10 against Trent Rockets – has taken ten.
Carla Rudd has kept wicket in all six games so far, while Ella McCaughan, Tara Norris and Paige Scholfield are yet to play.
They will take on the Rockets at The Ageas Bowl in the Eliminator.
London Spirit
Men (3rd place): Mason Crane, Liam Dawson, Nathan Ellis, Ben McDermott, Brad Wheal, Chris Wood
The Men’s Spirit side have had a complete turnaround from their first season in The Hundred, where they finished in last place. A superb group stage has seen them finish in third, qualifying for the Eliminator where they will face Manchester Originals at The Ageas Bowl.
A selection of Hampshire players make up a core of the Spirits’ bowling attack with Mason Crane (10), Liam Dawson (8), Chris Wood (6), Nathan Ellis (5) and Brad Wheal (1) all taking wickets. Crane and Wood have both taken four wicket hauls in the competition.
Ben McDermott has played in half the group matches, scoring 98 runs.
Women (7th place): Charlie Dean (C), Nancy Harman, Alice Monaghan
Charlie Dean, who replaced Heather Knight as Spirit captain for this year’s competition, and Alice Monaghan have played in all six of their group games on their way to a seventh placed finish.
The side, who only just missed out on the Eliminator in 2021, have struggled to find any form this time around.
Nancy Harman also made one appearance in the competition.
Birmingham Phoenix
Men (4th place): Benny Howell
Hampshire announced that all-rounder Benny Howell would be re-joining the Club for the 2023 season and he has shown his white-ball credentials once again in this year’s competition.
Having taken 11 wickets in 2021, Howell has been clinical with the ball again this time around with nine more to his name as the Phoenix narrowly missed out on qualification for the Eliminator. He has also scored 63 runs.
Women (4th place): Georgia Elwiss
Phoenix suffered the same fate in the Women’s competition, with the Rockets’ net run rate the only thing keeping them from a spot in the Eliminator. Elwiss has been a steady performer across the six games – scoring 36 runs in three innings and taking six wickets.
Oval Invincibles
Women (1st place): Emily Windsor
Vipers’ batter Emily Windsor has made three appearances for the Invincibles who finished top of the group in the Women’s competition. Windsor is yet to face a ball yet and has made one catch.
