Hampshire Cricket would like to express their great sadness at the passing of former Chief Executive, Tony Baker, aged 77.

Tony was an outstanding contributor to Hampshire Cricket having played a leading role in the Club’s move from Northlands Road to the The Ageas Bowl, and he was known for his kind and genial nature, great senses of humour as well as his cricketing talents and contribution to cricket across the county.

Tony Baker was, quite simply, one of the nicest people I have ever worked with. Calm, unflappable and completely honest in everything he did; he was a true gentleman.

One of Tony’s greatest achievements was managing the relocation of Hampshire Cricket from Northlands Road to the The Ageas Bowl in a totally seamless manner. Over the two decades or so that I knew him, I don’t recall him ever raising his voice.

Tony will be sadly missed by Hampshire Cricket and by the many friends he has made throughout the cricket world and beyond. Our thoughts at this sad time are with Sally, Jonathan and Paul and Tony’s broader family and friends.

Rod Bransgrove, Hampshire Cricket Chairman

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Tony represented Old Tauntonians, with the all-rounder known for his skill both with the bat at the top of the order and with ball in hand opening the bowling.

Professionally, Tony was a partner with accountancy firm, Brooking Knowles & Lawrence, before becoming Hampshire Cricket Chief Executive in 1986, a position which he held for 15 years.

Prior to joining Hampshire Cricket, his involvement within Southern League cricket was also profound, first acting as treasurer before later being appointed league Chairman.

Tony's funeral will be held at Basingstoke Crematorium on Friday 10th November at 12:30pm.
