Hampshire Suffer Defeat At The Hands Of Strong Somerset Side
Gareth Berg impressed with both bat and ball but Hampshire suffered a 14-run defeat at Taunton
An impressive all-round performance from Gareth Berg (3-35 & 31) was not enough as Hampshire fell to a difficult 14-run NatWest T20 Blast defeat against Somerset at Taunton.
Berg offered a valuable contribution with the ball alongside Kyle Abbott (2-41) and Reece Topley (1-32) after the hosts elected to bat first and posted 204-9 from their allotted overs.
Lewis McManus (34), James Vince (33) and Michael Carberry (30) all looked in good touch with the bat, and despite Berg starring in the final overs of the innings, Hampshire fell short in their chasing effort.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Somerset began their innings at good pace courtesy of Lewis Gregory (43) and Steven Davies (32) who found the boundary at regular intervals in the opening powerplay.
The latter soon fell after the fielding restrictions were lifted, Shahid Afridi (1-43) the man to claim the wicket.
Gregory followed shortly after at the hands of Berg, however Jim Allenby (37) and James Hildreth (25) continued to bat positively to take their side towards 150.
Berg soon worked his magic again, striking twice in the 14th over, before Topley removed Allenby as the hosts slipped from 169-6.
Abbott also contributed two valuable wickets to make short work of the Somerset middle-order but their fast start ensured they nudged past 200 to conclude their allotted overs.
Set a target of 205 for victory, Hampshire began positively through skipper Vince - the right-hander crunched 29 from his first 12 deliveries and found the boundary with ease.
Despite the early loss of Rossouw, Vince looked to be building a superb platform but a Gregory yorker accounted for the Hampshire captain soon after, halting the momentum during the powerplay.
Wickets then fell at regular intervals, Groenewald, van der Merwe and Waller restricting the away-side with scalps, however Carberry and McManus constructed valuable knocks to give the visitors hope of nearing the target.
Both batsman made 30 but fell in quick succession to see Somerset remain in control with Hampshire still requiring 52 from the final four overs.
Berg struck several hefty blows once arriving at the crease, however the task proved to be too great, and the all-rounder was the final batsman to be dismissed with Hampshire 14 runs short of the required 205.
