Jack, Kelly & Eckland Named In Young Lions Training Group

Young all-rounders Eddie Jack and Dom Kelly along with batter Joseph Eckland have been selected in England Men's U19 22-player training group after two series against Australia Men's U19 were confirmed

Two series between England Men’s U19 and Australia Men’s U19 have been confirmed, with the Young Lions heading to Australia in January and in turn hosting their counterparts across August and September next year.

As part of this, the Young Lions training group for the winter - which includes Hampshire all-rounders Eddie Jack and Dom Kelly - has been announced, with the group having already spent two weeks together at a training camp in Abu Dhabi.

Also part of the training group is Hampshire Academy graduate and 2nd XI wicket-keeper/batter Joseph Eckland. Eckland has made his way through the ranks at Hampshire and has represented the 2nd XI seven times in 2022, putting in some solid performances.

Eckland has featured for England Under 19's on three occasions in the summer of 2022, scoring 75 runs in three innings with a high score of 48 not out.

The 18-year-old also featured seven times for the 2nd XI across both Championship and T20 cricket, averaging 44 in the 2nd XI Championship, scoring four half-centuries.

Eckland has impressed for England Under 19's again this winter, hitting scores of 51 and 89* during One Day matches against the UAE Under 19's in Abu Dhabi.

Kelly made his Hampshire First XI debut at the age of 16 against a touring Sri Lanka Development XI and impressed with the ball, taking three wickets.

During the 2022 season, Kelly also featured for Hampshire in 2nd XI cricket. The Winchester native played in three 2nd XI Championship matches, taking eight wickets at 31 and five T20 wickets in four games.

Eddie Jack is another promising youngster to have come through the Hampshire Academy. Jack featured for England Under 19's in their Test Match against Sri Lanka at Chelmsford, where he took two wickets.

An initial group of 22 was selected for that camp, with a smaller squad to be selected from this pool of players for the month-long overseas tour of Australia in the new year, which will consist of two Youth Tests, three Youth ODIs and one Youth IT20 across January and February.

The tours will be led by new Young Lions Head Coach Michael Yardy, who will be joined by Kadeer Ali (Batting Coach), Chris Brown (Spin Bowling Coach), Simon Cook (Fast Bowling Coach) and Chris Read (Fielding & WK Coach).

England Men’s U19 will host Australia Men’s U19 in summer 2023, with two Youth Tests and five Youth ODIs across August and September.

Young Lions Training Group: Tom Aspinwall (Lancashire), Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire), Joseph Eckland (Unattached), Bertie Foreman (Sussex), Sheridon Gumbs (Surrey), Jack Harding (Unattached), Alex Horton (Glamorgan), Matthew Hurst (Lancashire), Dan Ibrahim (Sussex), Eddie Jack (Hampshire), Dominic Kelly (Hampshire), Mitchell Killeen (Durham), Archie Lenham (Sussex), Stanley McAlindon (Durham), Yousef Majid (Surrey), Ben McKinney (Durham), James Rew (Somerset), Jamal Richards (Essex), Harry Singh (Unattached), Charlie Tear (Sussex), George Thomas (Somerset), Ross Whitfield (Durham)

At this level it’s really important that we’re able to offer a range of experiences that can add value to a young player’s development, and the training camp that we’re currently running in Abu Dhabi, plus competitive fixtures in the new year against Australia, is a good balance.

It’s really exciting for the players selected, and I’m looking forward to spending more time with the group, working with everyone and getting to know the group better.

We also look forward to hosting Australia in the summer of 2023, it’s important to test yourself against your peers and both series will provide important learning for us.

Michael Yardy, England Men's U19 Head Coach
