Dawson All Set For West Indies T20 Series

Hampshire all-rounder excited for England opportunity

After a busy summer with Hampshire and Southern Brave, Liam Dawson will spend another period of the winter representing his country.

Dawson was a travelling reserve for the IT20 World Cup in October, alongside Hampshire skipper James Vince who was called upon to replace an injured Jason Roy ahead of the semi-final. Now the duo have both been named in England’s IT20 squad for the tour of West Indies in January, an opportunity Dawson is looking forward to.

“It's always exciting,” he said. “I mean, you want to want to play for your country. I'm involved in the squads and thankfully I've got another opportunity to go with England, which I'm really looking forward to.”

The all-rounder hasn’t played an international T20 game since February 2018, but says that he is now more focused on enjoying his cricket rather than being driven to play for England.

“I'm 31 now, it's a case of enjoying my cricket again, not really thinking about playing for England,” Dawson said. “If it happens, it's brilliant. If not, obviously I’ll play for Hampshire and enjoy my cricket here.

“I’ve spent so many years of my life worrying about, you know, doing well and not doing well. It gets to a point where you leave all that alone and just enjoy the game.”

Experienced internationals and fellow spinners Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid have also made Eoin Morgan’s 16-man squad, but Dawson remained positive and determined to make the most of his England chance.

“I think we're all pretty experienced now at what we do, they have both played a lot of cricket internationally and play a lot domestically as well,” he said.

“What I'm doing is just sticking to the basics really and just enjoying every training session, every game that you get to play.”
