Liam Dawson 'Excited' For Further England Lions Experience

The all-rounder has been named in a 16-man England Lions squad to face Pakistan A next month

It’s been an impressive winter so far for Hampshire all-rounder Liam Dawson and with further international level cricket beckoning in the coming months, it’s been an off-season to remember so far.

Having represented England at Under-19 age-group level, Dawson has enjoyed yet further taste of international cricket this year, after first being selected for England’s EPP winter programme, before then receiving a call-up to the England Lions squad for their December tour of the UAE.

The 25-year-old was an important component to a 3-2 series win over Pakistan A, averaging an excellent 25 with the ball and 59 with the bat, and is particularly pleased with the way both himself and the team performed throughout the 50-over series.

It was very pleasing to be able to be a part of the series win and to contribute in the five games with both bat and ball was a real positive for me. To win the series and in exciting fashion too, it was a fantastic feeling and I really enjoyed the trip and the whole environment whilst I was out there.

Dawson was joined by team-mates James Vince and Reece Topley in the Lions squad, with the former also skippering the side.

Both Vince and Dawson have since been named in a 16-man England Lions squad set to take on Pakistan A again next month, and he’s delighted to be involved in the set-up once again.

I’ve played a lot of cricket with Vincey and it was brilliant to have that with him again, I thought he captained brilliantly and Reece I know well from my stint at Essex last season, so it’s good to have those guys around the system.

We head out to Dubai in the first week of January and the hard work begins from there but I’m really looking forward and excited for the challenge - it’s an exciting time for us and an exciting time as a part of Hampshire Cricket and long may that continue.

Former New Zealand Test Bowler Daniel Vettori was also on hand as part of the coaching staff on the Lions recent tour and his presence is something Dawson feels has been particularly beneficial to his development.

To have experienced former players of that calibre there during the tour and to be able to pick their brains it was great. Especially with Dan Vettori as a fellow left-arm spinner – the way he spoke about his four overs in t20 cricket and how he uses each delivery carefully to build pressure, that’s something that I’ve really learnt a lot from.
