Match Preview: Essex Eagles v Hampshire - Royal London One-Day Cup

Hampshire head to Chelmsford to take on Essex Eagles in the latest instalment of Royal London One-Day Cup action on Sunday

After an excellent start to this year’s Royal London One-Day Cup which has seen four wins from the opening four fixtures, Hampshire will be looking to continue their quest for top-spot in the South Group with a fifth victory of the campaign against Essex Eagles at Chelmsford.

Hampshire Squad:

A 13-man squad has been named for Sunday’s trip to Essex with Aneurin Donald and Brad Taylor part of the travelling party alongside the final XI that claimed victory against Gloucestershire.

James Vince continued his excellent start to this year’s 50-over campaign on Friday, striking a career List A best against Chris Dent’s side, with his knock of 190 also breaking the record for Hampshire’s highest limited-overs individual innings. The Hampshire captain now sits second in the list of top run-getters in the competition this season with 355 runs to his name, and he’ll be hoping to further to his tally in good style on Sunday ahead of joining up with England for their upcoming ODI & IT20 fixtures against Ireland and Pakistan.

Kyle Abbott and Liam Dawson both showed their excellent skill with the ball once again in Friday’s victory and the duo now have 19 wickets between them to begin this year’s title defence – both will be looking to extend their good form heading into the second half of the competition.

The Opposition:

Essex Eagles have had a difficult start to their 2019 One-Day Cup campaign, suffering three defeats from their opening four contests to begin the competition, including a 36-run D/L loss against Somerset on Friday. After claiming a comfortable victory against Glamorgan in their opening contest, three below-par performances have followed, but Ryan ten Doeschate’s side will be hoping to get back on track quickly on Sunday.

Varun Chopra struck two centuries in the first two matches for the Eagles, but a quad strain has kept the top-order batsman side-lined since then – Tom Westley and Dan Lawrence are the only other batsmen to have made more than 150 runs for their side so far and will be key to their chances of success with the bat against Hampshire.

Experienced Australian seamer Peter Siddle has proved to be their biggest threat with the ball this season with nine wickets at an average of just over 22 good enough to see him in the top five wicket-takers in the competition.
