On This Day: Debut Delight For Crane

Mason Crane captures two big wickets on his Hampshire debut five years ago today

Hampshire Cricket's historian Dave Allen takes a look back on timely memorable moments in his ‘On This Day’ series.

Mason Crane (2-35) - Hampshire v Surrey, T20 Blast: 10th July 2015

On their way to that season’s Finals Day, Hampshire had a home game against a Surrey side packed with past, present and future internationals, and when Batty won the toss he chose to field first.

Carberry (18) and Vince (31) opened with 36 from 23 balls, then Vince and top-scorer Adam Wheater (78 from 49 balls) posted a 52-run partnership. Owais Shah supported well with 37 and the final total of 186-5 was challenging – even more so when Jackson Bird and Gareth Berg despatched the two Surrey openers with the score on 16.

Sangakkara and Solanki then began a rescue act with a partnership of 60 at which point Vince introduced his debut boy, leg-spinner Mason Crane, who proceeded to dismiss both men in consecutive overs, Sangakkara caught by Gatting and Solanki stumped by Wheater.

Will Smith added another two as Surrey lost four wickets for 14 runs and Crane finished a very satisfactory opening with 2-35. Azhar Mahmood hit 34 from 24 balls late on, but third spinner Danny Briggs with 3-21 ensured a victory for Hampshire by 29 runs.
