Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy Rewind: Elwiss Hits Emphatic Century

Georgia Elwiss hit the highest score of the season with a run-a-ball 115 against South East Stars at Hove in our second RHFT fixture of the year

With the 2022 season now firmly in the rear-view mirror, we're taking a look back at some of the performances that caught the eye throughout Southern Vipers' Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy campaign.

After a sterling one-ball innings in which she scored six runs the week before, Georgia Elwiss continued her ownership of the batting crease at Hove the next.

Having been put into bat first by South East Stars, the Vipers lost a couple of early wickets in the form of captain Georgia Adams and Maia Bouchier, and it was down to Elwiss and opener Ella McCaughan to steady the ship.

The all-rounder soon got her first boundary by cutting Alexa Stonehouse for four, before an exquisite cover drive off England’s Freya Davies the following over.

McCaughan was then run out in the 11th over, before Viper-turned-South East Star Paige Scholfield was caught for 17 in the 20th over, and the home side found themselves in a spot of bother.

Elwiss, now batting with Emily Windsor, continued her good form by emphatically pulling Alice Davidson-Richards for four, before she settled down and Windsor took the reins with the power hitting.

As their partnership was nearing the 100-run mark, Elwiss capitalised on a drag down by Alice Capsey, before upping the aggression herself.

She clipped a full ball from Davidson-Richards through mid on for four, before back-to-back boundaries off spinner Bryony Smith to bring up the 150 partnership.

Exactly two overs later, Elwiss reached her hundred – not that she was certain.

She feathered an inside edge from Eva Gray onto her pads, and only began to raise her bat once the umpire kept his hands firmly by his side.

The all-rounder brought up her second century for the Vipers in just 108 balls, but the former England international wanted more.

A few balls later, she came down the track to Davidson-Richards and launched her over midwicket for six, before some further innovation as she ramped a low full toss from Gray down to the deep third boundary for four.

Her innings eventually came to an end as she looked to go over the top once again, but she should only find Grace Gibbs on the midwicket boundary, and she had to go for 115.

Elwiss later picked up the wicket of the dangerous Alice Capsey for just six, and the Vipers went on to win the match by a mammoth 133 runs.
