Southern Vipers On The Road To Back-To-Back Finals

The Southern Vipers are aiming to make it back-to-back regional trophies at Northampton as they look to win the Charlotte Edwards Cup for the first time after winning the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy at the same venue last year

The Southern Vipers face a familiar ground for the final of the 2022 Charlotte Edwards Cup where they will face either Central Sparks or South East Stars to win a trophy named after their coach.

The two-time Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy winners are unbeaten so far in 2022, topping Group B by 13 points with three of the six wins resulting in an additional bonus point.

The Vipers started off with back-to-back home games at Hove and The Ageas Bowl, and they kicked the tournament off in sublime fashion, with an eight-wicket win against Thunder, and a 31-run win against Lightning under lights.

Three away days then followed with the first coming at the Riverside against Northern Diamonds, arguably the Vipers toughest game of the season so far.

Bowled out for 126, with 48 from Danni Wyatt propping up the total, the Diamonds got off to a lightning start thanks to 51 from Bess Heath.

With the score on 49-0 in the seventh over, Tara Norris managed to run Sterre Kalis out with a direct hit to start the collapse of the Diamonds, as they lost 7-66, with Linsey Smith being bowled off the final ball of the match to give Freya Kemp a much deserved wicket.

A five-wicket win against Lightning at Trent Bridge followed, where Georgia Elwiss took 3-28 and Danni Wyatt struck 76 off 44 balls to see the Vipers over the line.

An exemplary performance against Thunder came next as the bowlers restricted the home side to just 94-6 in 20 overs, with Charlie Dean taking 3-16 before Georgia Elwiss saw the Vipers home with 38*.

The return fixture against Northern Diamonds rounded off the group stage with a six-wicket win where Wyatt got the home side off to a flier, scoring 35 off just 16 balls, whilst a calm Georgia Adams saved her highest score for the final match, falling three runs shy of what would’ve been a well-deserved half-century.
