Trio Sign Rookie Contracts with Hampshire

Toby Albert, John Turner & Harry Petrie earn deals with the Club

Toby Albert, John Turner and Harry Petrie have been awarded rookie contracts by Hampshire Cricket.

Rookie contracts are the stepping stone between the Academy and the senior squad with the players training and interacting with the first team.

19 year old Albert impressed the Hampshire coaching staff with his imposing style and quickfire hitting at the top of the order. The Berkshire born batsman hit 105 from just 60 balls in a T20 for the Hampshire 2XI against a Sussex 2XI bowling attack which featured England’s Ollie Robinson.

This helped Albert earn his first team debut when Hampshire faced Somerset at The Ageas Bowl in the Vitality Blast in July. Albert also led the way with the bat for the Hampshire Academy in 2021, notching over 700 runs at an average of 52 in the Southern Premier Cricket League.

Toby’s had a great season with us to gain his contract. He suffered a knee injury at U17 level which kept him out for a long time so it’s really pleasing to see how well he has done on his return. He has particularly impressed in the Hampshire 2XI this year and he is a really exciting player across all formats.

South African born fast-bowler John Turner impressed in his opportunity in the first-team during this season’s Royal London Cup. The 20 year old finished as Hampshire’s joint second leading wicket taker in the competition, averaging just 27.

Turner picked up the prize scalp of England legend Sir Alastair Cook with his first Hampshire wicket on debut in July.

It’s been a long-term project with John who has spent time playing with Hampshire’s age groups. He’s got a great attitude - he made his full debut this year and there’s a lot more to come from him. I fully expect him to be pushing for first team spots moving forwards.

Seam bowler Harry Petrie played regularly for the Hampshire 2XI & Academy in 2021 and was  recently named in the squad for the England Under 19s against West Indies in September. Petrie’s most notable bowling performance came against Sussex 2XI in June as he picked up impressive T20 figures of 4-10 from his four overs.

Harry has been with us since a very young age and this season he has exceeded expectations with his performances and really earned this contract. He has been relentless in every side he has played for this year and we want to invest in him for the long term.
