Winter Watch: Vince Top-Scores For England In Ashes Opener

James Vince, Rilee Rossouw, George Bailey and Brad Taylor were all in action overseas last week

Four Hampshire players featured overseas last week, with James Vince, Rilee Rossouw, George Bailey and Brad Taylor all in action in either Australia, Bangladesh or New Zealand.


James Vince made his Ashes debut as England contested the first Test of the series down under, with Joe Root's side facing a Australia at the Gabba.

England elected to bat first having won the toss, and after making his way to the crease following the early loss of Alastair Cook, Vince batted with excellent composure to lead his side's recovery.

The Hampshire skipper went on to record his first Test fifty, notching a superb 83 to contribute significantly to England's first-innings total of 302. 

An unbeaten century from Australia captain, Steve Smith, alongside fiery spells from the hosts' seamers saw England on the back foot soon after however, and Australia went on to seal a 10-wicket victory early on day five. 

George Bailey was in Sheffield Shield action for Tasmania over the weekend as they faced South Australia in the latest round of four-day fixtures.

Former Hampshire seamer Jackson Bird claimed five wickets to help put Tasmania in a strong position inside the opening two days, before Bailey struck a timely 80 in his side's second-innings to help build a lead of 385. The right-hander then led his side to victory with the home-side dismissing South Australia for 243 in their final batting effort.

Rilee Rossouw featured in both of Kuhlna Titans' Bangladesh Premier League fixtures last week, as they took on Rajashi Kings and Rangpur Riders.

The left-hander was promoted to open in both gamesand added scores of 20 and 11 as his side claimed back-to-back victories against tough opposition, taking them to second in the competition table

Brad Taylor turned out for Wellington-based side, Petone Cricket Club in two fixtures this weekend, all as part of his overseas placement directed by England's International Pathway Programme.

The all-rounder claimed figures of 1-51 in Saturday's fixture against Onslow Cricket Club, before going on to strike an impressive 77 from just 89 balls with the bat in Sunday's match against Victoria University of Wellington Cricket Club.
