Sean Ervine

All-Rounder

“Slug” is a left-hand batsman and right-arm medium-pace bowler.

He was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, and represented his country in five Tests (2003-4) and 42 limited overs matches including the first ever international at The Rose Bowl.

He joined Hampshire and made his debut in 2005 when he was awarded his county cap. He scored centuries in the semi-final and final of the successful C&G Trophy in 2005 and won further trophies with Hampshire in 2009 and 2010.

His highest First Class score to date is 237*, recorded v Somerset in 2010. That's the highest ever score by a Hampshire player batting below number six in the order.

In 2005 he had the unusual honour of making his best Championship bowling figures twice in the same season against the same side, taking 5-60 both times against Glamorgan (the latter was from fewer overs).

In 2012 he was Hampshire’s Most Valuable Player according to the FTI MVP Rankings system and celebrated by signing a contract extension that will keep him at Utilita Bowl until 2016 - beyond his 10th year here.

At the beginning of the 2013 season Ervine was just 70 runs shy of his 10,000th for the Club in all competitions and already had more than 300 Hampshire wickets across all formats.

During the 2014 season, Ervine became the first Hampshire player to make 100 T20 appearances for the Club.

Despite part of his 2015 season being disrupted by a hand injury, 500 runs in the Championship and a number of useful knocks in the NatWest T20 Blast certainly showed Ervine’s importance to the side. This included Hampshire's first century of the season, in the draw against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in April.

His commitment and dedication towards the club’s official charity, Hampshire Cricket in the Community, earned him the Capital FM Clubman of the Year Award in 2015.

Awarded a benefit year for 2016, Ervine was named Hampshire's stand-in limited-overs skipper in May, when James Vince was selected in England's Test Squad to face Sri Lanka.

For the first time in his career, Ervine surpassed 1,000 first-class runs in a season when he smashed 158 not out against Surrey at the Kia Oval in September 2016.

Voted Batsman of the Year and Fans' Player of the Year, the all-rounder finished the 2016 season as the 11th highest run-scorer in Specsavers County Championship Division One with 1,050 runs at an average of 61.8.

Slug has made the transition to an off-spinner in 2017, but that hasn't restricted his talent with the bat, moving past 11,000 first-class runs and hitting 203 in the win over Warwickshire in June, his highest total since 2010.
