Hand Therapy

Hand Therapy is a speciality which provides expert assessment and holistic rehabilitation for acute and chronic hand, wrist or elbow conditions. It can include many different treatment options which are tailored to the individual patient’s need after a throughout assessment of structure, movement and function.

What can we help with? 

We can see people following trauma or elective surgery including:

  • Trigger finger
  • Crush injuries
  • Carpal Tunnel or Cubital Tunnel Release
  • Tendon Repairs & Transfers
  • Wrist surgeries
  • Ganglion Removal
  • Amputations
  • Elbow Pain
  • Tennis/Golfers Elbow

We can also see people with more chronic conditions which impact on the function of their hand or wrist such rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthrosis, repetitive strain type injuries and neurological conditions.

  • Tendonitis/Tenosynovitis
  • Joint stiffness or contractures
  • Arthritis
  • Pain Syndromes
  • Nerve compression syndromes (e.g., Carpal Tunnel Syndrome)
  • Scarring (e.g., Keloid or Hypertrophic scars)
  • Epicondylitis (Tennis and Golfers Elbow)
  • Wrist impingements
  • Hypermobility conditions
  • Stroke, spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury affecting the upper limb

Treatments:

Hand and arm injuries are frequently complex in nature and can cause significant difficulties in completing day to day activities. Your initial appointment will involve a comprehensive assessment of upper limb function including movement, strength and sensation. This will include a detailed assessment of the structures of the upper limb and where appropriate testing of muscles, tendons, ligament and nerves.

Treatment will be tailored to the individual and dependent on the condition. It may include the following:

  • Splinting and orthoses- including the fabrication of tailor made, personalised thermoplastic splinting.
  • Management of scars and swelling
  • Home exercises programmes
  • Sensory re-education
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Massage
  • Education regarding condition or surgery
  • Advice and information for returning to previous level of function including work and sports

  • Initial Assessment (50 minutes): £80.00
  • Follow Up Appointments (30 minutes): £50.00
  • Custom splints: Prices vary, please enquire for more information
