Hampshire's Barber Selected for England U19s

15-strong squad to tour South Africa

The ECB have announced this week that Hampshire Academy’s Tom Barber has been selected in a 15-strong England Under-19s squad for the forthcoming tour of South Africa.

The team will play two four-day Tests and five one-day internationals versus their South Africa counterparts early next year. The first Test will be at Sahara Park Newlands, Cape Town, from January 27 and the second at Boland Park, Paarl, from February 3. The first ODI is on February 13 and the last eight days later.

The tour, which runs from January 23 to February 21 2013, is the initial part of the preparation for the Under-19 World Cup in February 2014 and the squad therefore predominantly consists of Under-18 and Under-17 players.

Coach Tim Boon said: "I am really excited about the development opportunities for players selected to tour South Africa in January and February next year to play two four-day Tests and five one-day internationals.’’

“The squad includes five players with high potential who have graduated from the ECB's Under 17s England Development Programme. The learning curve will be steep with three international series prior to the next ICC Under-19s World Cup in February 2014.’’

“Four players still eligible for the Under-19s squad have progressed to the Potential EPP Fast Bowlers squad while Essex wicket-keeper Ben Foakes, a recent graduate from the England Development Programme, has also toured India this winter with the England Performance Programme."
