Hampshire trialist Bilal Shafayat struck 219 not out in his first knock for the Second XI but it wasn’t enough as Glamorgan secured a three-wicket win in the two sides’ Championship opener at The Rose Bowl.

The former Nottinghamshire man was the star of the hosts’ opening innings as they racked up 442-7 declared on day one.

He was then supported in the second innings by yet more promising signs of recovery from Dimitri Mascarenhas (74) as well as fellow trialist Karl Turner (82) and Benny Howell (77) as Hampshire added 311 (for 3) to a first innings lead of 138.

That left the visitors with a target of 450 to win and despite a good bowling performance from Atif Ali – brother of Kabir – (who took 4-98 and registered five maidens from his 21 overs) Glamorgan reached the target thanks to an epic 234 from opener Nick James.

To rub salt in the wound, Hampshire lost paceman David Balcombe with a recurrence of the back injury that kept him out of the end of last season.

Jon Ayling’s side look to bounce back immediately with a home Second XI Trophy match against the same team on Thursday.
