The Hampshire Royals look to extend their stay at the top of Clydesdale Bank 40 Group B with a Jubilee Weekend double-header against the Surrey Lions (at The Kia Oval) and Scottish Saltires (at The Ageas Bowl).

Giles White names the same 12-man squad for the fixture that started the competition with three wins out of three, only losing their 100% record with a narrow, high-scoring loss against the Nottinghamshire Outlaws on Thursday.

Despite that result, the Royals couldn’t wish to be in better form with batsman, Michael Carberry leading the CB40 run-scoring charts and Jimmy Adams (51), Sean Ervine (68) and Dimi Masacarenhas (48) all enjoying considerable knocks in that Outlaws match.

And, as well as having plenty of competition for the seam bowling slots with the return of Mascarenhas from the IPL, the spinners are also enjoying some form, with Liam Dawson’s two wickets on Thursday seeing him join Danny Briggs on four competition scalps so far.

Their two oppositions look very different on paper with the Lions going pound-for-pound with the Royals at the top of the group having taken six points from three matches, and the Saltires widely regarded to be the underdogs of the group.

The Lions have been ruthless registering a massive 295 runs in a 100-run victory over Somerset, bowling well to beat Scotland on Duckworth/Lewis and putting in an excellent all-round performance to beat Durham by 60 runs.

By contrast, the Saltires have lost three of their opening five matches (including an 89-run loss to Hampshire in the reverse fixture), scraping a single opening-day victory over Nottinghamshire on Duckworth/Lewis. However, they did put in an impressive performance against the Royals in Uddingston and, currently sitting mid-table, might fancy their chances of pushing on if they can get a result at The Ageas Bowl.

Hampshire manager, Giles White said; “We’ve got two important games coming up; there’s a lot of good sides in this group so every game’s important. The Oval’s a tough place to play but we’re playing good cricket. Even in the defeat against Nottingham, there were an enormous amount of positives to take out of that so we go up there very confident.

“And then, obviously, on Monday back at The Ageas Bowl, we’ll hopefully get a big crowd and put on a good performance.

“We’re keeping the same squad. We’re very pleased with the way this team’s performing in one-day cricket so long may that continue.”
