“Macca” is a right-hand batsman and occasional right-arm medium pace bowler from South Africa who joined Hampshire on a ‘Kolpak’ contract in 2010.
He has played 58 Test matches for South Africa with a high score of 226 v Bangladesh in 2008 and 64 limited overs internationals. In 2009 he was one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year.
McKenzie first joined the club for the 2010 season, scoring 942 first-class runs at an average of 47.10. His highest Championship score that season was 115* v Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge – an innings that took them to a memorable victory.
In the same season he was a member of Hampshire’s Friends Provident t20 trophy winning team, scoring 73 v Somerset at Taunton and 52 against the same opponents in the Final, wining the Man-of-the-Match award.
In 2011 he was once again a talisman for the club, being the only Hampshire batsman (and one of only 12 in the top flight) to score more than 1,000 Championship runs. He also scored centuries against Worcestershire at New Road and Warwickshire at The Rose Bowl as well as combining with Michael Carberry to put on the ninth-highest partnership in the history of First-Class cricket against Yorkshire.
His own contribution was a First Class career-best of 237. The partnership, which eventually totalled 523, is the highest in Hampshire's history.
McKenzie was a key part of the Royals’ double-winning success in the FLt20 and CB40 competitions in 2012, crafting the match-winning innings (79 not out) in Hampshire’s Friends Life t20 Quarter-Final victory over the Nottinghamshire Outlaws [pictured above] as well as flying back from South Africa specifically to take part in the Royals' Lord's Final against Warwickshire.
He returns to the Ageas Bowl for his fourth season in 2013 and is available to play in all formats.
