Alfonso Thomas Signs New Contract Extension

The former South Africa seamer has signed a new contract extension, committing to a further two years as a key member of the coaching staff

Hampshire Cricket are delighted to announce that Alfonso Thomas has signed a new contract extension with the club.

Thomas, who joined Hampshire as First Team Assistant Coach in January, has committed to a further two years as a key member of the coaching staff, led by First Team Manager Adrian Birrell.

The former South Africa seamer enjoyed a 17-year career on the domestic county circuit, including eight years with Somerset, before moving into coaching following his retirement.

After holding roles with Kent, Surrey, West Indies and Khulna Titans – which saw him work alongside Sri Lanka legend and new Southern Brave Head Coach Mahela Jayawardene – Thomas took up the position at the Ageas Bowl ahead of the 2019 campaign, in which he worked closely with the first-team squad and its bowlers.

Thomas’ first season at the club coincided with success in both red-ball and white-ball competitions in 2019, as Hampshire reached a second consecutive One-Day Cup final at Lord’s and recorded the highest finish in Division One of the County Championship since 2008.

I’ve really enjoyed my first year at Hampshire and I’m looking forward to continue working with such a talented group of guys here, both players and coaches. As a club we have big aspirations for 2020 and beyond and I’m excited to be a part of that.

Alfonso Thomas

Alfonso has had a positive impact on the playing group and his style and approach to coaching has proved a good fit for us. It’s an exciting time to be at the club and it’s great to have someone with Alfonso’s knowledge guiding our bowlers.
