Hampshire Capture Markram Signing

The 24-year-old South Africa batsman joins the Club as overseas player in place of Dimuth Karunaratne

Hampshire Cricket are delighted to announce the signing of South Africa batsman, Aiden Markram.

Markram replaces Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne, who had previously signed with the Club as overseas player to begin the season but is now unavailable due to international commitments.

The 24-year-old batsman will arrive in time for the start of the Specsavers County Championship curtain-raiser against Essex at the The Ageas Bowl beginning on Friday 5th April, and will feature in both domestic red-ball and white-ball competitions until early May. His availability following this period will then be determined by his involvement in South Africa’s World Cup campaign, with the opportunity for Karunaratne to return in his place should the Sri Lankan captain’s playing commitments allow.

Markram, who became the second youngest player ever to captain South Africa in ODIs when stepping in for the injured Faf du Plessis in 2018, has made 17 Test and 18 ODI appearances since making his international debut in September 2017.

The right-hander has quickly become a prominent feature at the top of the order for his national side, totalling 1,358 runs in his Test career so far at an average of 43.80. The first two of his four centuries came in just his second and third Tests as he became the first player in South Africa’s history to score two hundreds in their first three Test matches.

Prior to his international debut, Markram also captained a South Africa A side that faced Hampshire in a four-day first-class fixture at the The Ageas Bowl back in 2017, in which he struck an unbeaten century.

We’re really pleased to have secured the signing of Aiden. He’s certainly a player that we’ve kept a close eye on for the last couple of years and he’s had a great start to his international career in that time – he’s one of the best young talents in the world at this stage in terms of top-order batsman.

We start the season against a strong Essex team so it’s important to get him in as soon as possible and prepped for that fixture but we’re looking forward to having him with us to begin the season.

Giles White, Director Of Cricket

I’m very excited to be joining Hampshire for the start of their season. Hampshire have a great squad and I’m looking forward to working with the coaching staff and contributing to the goals of the team. The Ageas Bowl and its facilities are brilliant and I have always wanted to go back after touring there with South Africa A so I am grateful for the opportunity.
