Opening batter Ella McCaughan scored 72 against Lightning at Derby, her highest score for Southern Vipers
With the 2022 season now firmly in the rear-view mirror, we're taking a look back at some of the performances that caught the eye throughout Southern Vipers' Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy campaign.
It was a good day for batting at Derby on World Snake Day as whilst Hampshire Hawks were on their way to a third T20 Blast trophy, Southern Vipers had already won their equivalent, and were heading towards their tenth straight win of the season.
Georgia Adams opted to bat first on a boiling hot Saturday morning in July – a very wise decision as the game panned out.
McCaughan opened her boundary count with an exquisite cover drive off Sophie Munro in the third over, and backed it up with consecutive boundaries off Lightning’s captain, Kathryn Bryce, with a cut shot followed up by a clip off her legs.
Piepa Cleary was pulled to the square leg boundary for four as McCaughan rocked back and pounced on the short ball from the Australian to take the Vipers opening stand to one shy of fifty.
The half-century partnership was brought up in the next over with a four from Adams, but McCaughan capitalised herself on a full ball from Bryce which she clipped through midwicket for another boundary.
The very next over, she pulled off spinner Lucy Higham away for four, before another emphatic pull shot, this time off Alicia Presland.
The hundred partnership was brought up in the 19th over, before McCaughan herself reached the milestone of fifty, as she pulled Higham out into the deep for a single.
The Vipers opener continued to pummel anything that was dropped short by the Lightning attack, as she pulled Presland away for another four through the leg side.
She then danced down the wicket to Lucy Higham as she started to go through the gears, with a big total on the cards for the Vipers.
Another short ball came and went, as McCaughan pulled Teresa Graves through midwicket for her tenth boundary.
The opening duo of Adams and McCaughan passed the 150 mark before the latter was dismissed for 72, her highest score for the Vipers to date.
