Southern Vipers Sign Mignon du Preez

The South African right-hander has signed for the duration of the 2017 Kia Super League

The Southern Vipers are pleased to announce the signing of former South African captain Mignon du Preez.

The right-hander has signed for the duration of the 2017 Kia Super League competition and arrives as a replacement for fellow South African teammate, all-rounder Dane van Niekerk, who has withdrawn due to injury.

Du Preez has represented her country in over 150 limited over games, scoring almost 4,000 runs and will join the Vipers ahead of the T20 competition, which starts on 10 August.

I am delighted to welcome Mignon to the Vipers squad. I consider ourselves fortunate in that we have found such a talented and experienced player to replace Dane van Niekerk. She will certainly add value to our batting unit and comes with a high reputation as an excellent fielder.”

Bob Parks, Southern Vipers General Manager

The top-order batter made her debut for South African when she was just 17 years of age, hitting an unbeaten 55 against Pakistan in January 2007.

She then shared a record partnership of 224 runs with Johmari Logtenberg just six months later as the pair registered the fourth highest stand of all time in their victory over the Netherlands.

In 2011, Du Preez was awarded the captaincy of South Africa for all three-formats, and was in charge for 46 ODIs, 50 T20Is and one Test match, in which she scored a century against India in 2014.

She led South Africa to their first Women's World T20 Semi-Final in the same year whilst also going on to record victories against both India and Bangladesh on the sub-continent under her guidance.

The 28-year-old became the first South African to score more than 1,000 career T20I runs in February 2016, when she scored 39 against England at the Wanderers and earlier this year she became the first women to play in 100 ODI’s for South Africa.

Du Preez was also part of the South African side that reached the semi-finals of the recent Women’s World Cup in England & Wales, contributing an impressive 76* as they were knocked out against England.

The Kia Super League will be broadcast live on television and radio this summer with Sky Sports providing live coverage of six ‘double-headers’ alongside NatWest T20 Blast matches. The Southern Vipers televised home fixture this season will see them take on Western Storm at the The Ageas Bowl on Thursday 10th August, ahead of Hampshire's NatWest T20 Blast fixture against Glamorgan.
