Southern Vipers Sign New Zealand Spinner Morna Nielsen

Left-armer joins as a replacement for Australian Megan Schutt

The Southern Vipers have signed New Zealand spinner Morna Nielsen as a replacement for their overseas fast-bowler Megan Schutt.

Nielsen, who is ranked second in the ICC Women’s Player Rankings for the T20 format, is hugely experienced in international cricket having played for the White Ferns since 2010. She replaces Schutt who has been ruled out from taking part in the competition due to injury.

In the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 Nielsen finished as the equal leading wicket-taker and whilst at the ICC World Twenty20 2016, the left-armer took figures of 4-0-4-0 - the most economical T20 International performance in the history of the tournament.

The chance to come in and play at the Southern Vipers as an injury replacement player is exciting. It came out of the blue as I was preparing to hunker down for the New Zealand winter and train indoors through the cold, so I jumped at the chance to head back to summer.

It's a real privilege to have an opportunity to play in the inaugural Kia Super League and in particular the Southern Vipers. The squad is well rounded and has a good combination of experience and youth - it’s also a chance to learn from one of the greatest players the Women's game has seen in Charlotte Edwards.
