2022 Vitality Blast champions Hampshire Hawks begin their 2023 T20 campaign at Taunton against Somerset on Wednesday 24th May.
We are counting down the days until the Hawks’ title defence begins and today marks 58 days until then. Scottish international and the Hawks’ number 58 Brad Wheal recorded figures of 5-38 against Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens in 2022 – his first five-for in T20 cricket.
The Hawks were put into bat first and scores in the forties form skipper James Vince and Joe Weatherley - as well as a cameo from young Toby Albert - guided them to a score of 134/4.
With the ball, Mason Crane and Chris Wood took two and three wickets respectively but it was to be Brad Wheal that stole the show.
The right-arm seamer began by finding the edge of the dangerous Colin Ingram with the final ball of his first over, before taking the wickets of Kiran Carlson and Eddie Byrom in consecutive deliveries to put his side in the ascendency.
After a quiet third over, Wheal came back in to bowl the final over of Glamorgan's innings and showed his typical steeliness at the death.
The home side needed 17 runs to win with two wickets remaining but a beautiful delivery from Wheal took out Dan Douthwaite’s stumps, before Prem Sisodiya was caught by Liam Dawson with the penultimate ball of the match - giving the Hawks a nine-run victory.
