A century from Michael Roberts followed bowling returns of 4-18 from Chris Wood and 5-60 from Danny Briggs to secure a win in the final home Second Eleven Championship game of the season at The Ageas Bowl.

After winning the toss and electing to bat the visitors looked in trouble as Hampshire’s opening bowlers tore into the top order, leaving them 16-5 after just seven overs. David Griffiths picked up the first, that of Chris Dent (4), then Wood removed Gareth Roderick and Will Gidman without scoring in his first over. The next two wickets followed shortly as Griffiths (3-45) had Michael Beard (2) caught behind with the score on 6-4, he then produced a caught and bowled to remove Jack Taylor (5).

Therefore, the sixth wicket partnership of 42 between James Fuller (27) and Cameron Herring (26) helped alleviate the stress on Gloucestershire’s top order but Jack Sheppard (1-29) managed to prevent the partnership going any further as he produced a delivery that Fuller edged to keeper Adam Rouse with the score on 58. Ed Young (32) batted fluently with Herring before he fell to Briggs (2-16), Uzi Qureshi then went to the same bowler without scoring. Young then put on 42 for the ninth wicket with Craig Miles (14*) before Wood claimed the last two wickets in consecutive balls to end the visitors innings on 121.

The Hampshire innings started better than their opposition’s reaching 28 before Michael Roberts (20) was lbw to Gidman and Sean Terry (8) suffered an identical fate just five balls later. James Vince (3) couldn't help push the score on when he was bowled by Fuller (1-45), but Hamza Riazuddin (22) then combined well with Jake George (17) to take the score to 67 before the former was caught behind off Gidman (3-40). George and Rouse (60*) added a further 31 before George fell lbw to Miles (3-28) and the same bowler then took the next two wickets as he removed Wood (0) and Wilf Marriott (7) to leave the home side 121-7.

Briggs (11) then added 35 to the total with Rouse taking the Hampshire side to a first innings lead, before spinner Young (1-45) trapped him lbw. Fast bowler Griffiths (36) then proved an unlikely batting partner for Rouse as he added his runs off just 40 balls striking three fours and three sixes during his innings before Matt Taylor had him caught by Young. Taylor (2-32) then picked up the wicket of Matt King (0) leaving the home side 204 all out and a lead of 83.

Gloucestershire's second innings could've started in similar fashion to their first as Roderick was lbw to Griffiths in the second over with the score on two. But batsmen Dent (73) and Qureshi (51) took control of the match adding 139 to the total - a partnership that proved to be the highest of the three days – and it ensured the home side would have to bat again. But with the score on 141 in the final over of day two Briggs removed Qureshi to halt the visitor’s proceedings.

Day three started in better fashion for Hampshire as Gidman (12) and Dent both fell to Briggs with Riazuddin (1-44) picking up a wicket for the addition of just 35 runs. Fuller (14) looked to attack the bowlers, adding his 14 from 18 balls before Briggs trapped him lbw. Jack Taylor (18) continued where Fuller left off scoring his 18 from just 12 balls with four fours, Griffiths (2-42) then returned to the attack and had him caught by Wood. Beard (1) and Miles (1) both added just one run each before Wood (2-68) removed the pair giving him match figures of 6-86. With Gloucestershire leading by 152, Herring (30) tried to push the score on further with Matt Taylor (1), adding a 10th wicket partnership of 22 before he, himself, fell to spinner Briggs (5-60). The wicket gave Hampshire a target of 175 from 59 overs to win.

Hampshire's reply didn't start well when Terry was caught by Gidman off Fuller (1-33) without scoring. But Roberts (101*) then took hold of the match with Riazuddin (21) as they added 55 for the second wicket before the latter fell to Matt Taylor (1-23) with the score on 75. Vince (53*) then batted fluently with Roberts taking the home side to 116-2 at tea requiring a further 59 runs to win. After the break the duo continued where they left off as Roberts reached three figures in 137 balls, hitting 16 fours in his stay at the crease. Vince then hit a cover drive for four to reach his half century and win the game for the home side.
