Bilal Mustapha SHAFAYAT
“Billy” is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm, medium-fast bowler who can also keep wicket.
Signed on a one-year contract for the 2012 season, Shafayat played some second XI cricket in 2011, scoring 479 runs (including a double-hundred against Glamorgan and a century against Middlesex) in two Second XI Championship matches.
He then started the 2012 season in a similar fashion in the “Twos” and, when – for a variety of reasons – Hampshire needed more batting strength in depth, he was drafted into the senior team for a rain-affected LV= County Championship match against Derbyshire at The Ageas Bowl.
He certainly made his mark, scoring 93 on debut and putting on a partnership of 164 for the second wicket!
A former Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire player, Shafayat also has two unusual claims to fame, being the youngest Championship player in Notts’ history (at 16) and as the object of Ricky Ponting’s anger when asked to assist (as 12th man) the last wicket partnership of Jimmy Anderson and Monty Panesar earn a nervy draw in the final moments England’s first Test in Cardiff in 2009.
