Alsop Called Up for England U19 Squad

Hampshire batsman flies to South Africa

Hampshire batsman, Tom Alsop has joined fellow Academy player, Tom Barber on England's Under 19 tour of South Africa after captain, Shiv Thakor was ruled out with a broken finger.

Alsop flew out on Saturday having got the call late last week and may now be in line to play as early as the second Test against the hosts at Boland Park, Paarl, starting on 3 February.

The batsman was already a member of the England Development Programme's Under 17’s group and was involved in the practice and training camps the England Under 19’s attended at Loughborough prior to leaving for South Africa.

He joins fast-bowler, Barber, whose selection was annonuced before Christmas. Barber took 1-34 from nine overs in a warm-up match against a Western Cape Invitational XI last week. He has not been selected in the XI for the first Youth Test at Newlands, Cape Town.

In total, the team plays two four-day Tests and five one-day internationals versus their South Africa counterparts.

The tour, which runs from January 23 to February 21 2013, is the initial part of the preparation for the Under-19 World Cup in February 2014 and the squad therefore predominantly consists of Under-18 and Under-17 players.
