Michael Carberry & Neil McKenzie: 523 v Yorkshire (Rose Bowl, 2011)

Three counties, Yorkshire, Warwickshire and Hampshire hold two record partnerships in English county cricket. Holmes and Sutcliffe of Yorkshire with 555 for the first wicket hold the record for any wicket but the only other stand over 500 was by Michael Carberry and Neil McKenzie againstYorkshire at the Rose Bowl in 2011. As a match, it was unremarkable. Yorkshire scored 532 and Carberry and McKenzie had posted their first half-century together at the close of day two. There were just 51 overs on day three when the Hampshire score was 291-2, so it was the final morning when Hampshire avoided the follow-on. The stand was eventually broken after 135 overs when McKenzie was dismissed for 237 and Cork declared when Carberry reached 300 as the game drifted to a draw.

Hampshire’s other County record partnership and their only other one in excess of 400 was by two army officers and amateur batsmen, RM Poore and EG Wynyard, who posted 411 against Somerset in 1899. Poore scored 304, passing Wynyard’s 268 v Yorkshire at Southampton three years earlier which was previously Hampshire’s highest individual innings. In 1899, Somerset scored a respectable 315 and Hampshire were in trouble at 62-4 but they had recovered to 258-5 when the two men came together after the dismissal of nightwatchman Tom Soar for a fine 95. They were parted at 669 with the dismissal of Wynyard, Poore followed one run later and following the declaration, Wynyard took 3-18 as Hampshire won by an innings. In the huge Hampshire score, which remained their record until 2005, the Somerset wicketkeeper Archdale Palmer Wickham conceded no byes, but their opening bowler Edwin Tyler had figures of 4-201 in his 63 overs.
