Scorecard

A brilliant century from Michael Bates (102) and 4-49 from Nathan Rimmington helped the Hampshire Second XI beat the Surrey Second XI by 56 runs in the Trophy Match at The Ageas Bowl’s Nursery Ground.

After home skipper Sean Terry won the toss and decided to bat first, Bates hit 13 fours during his eye-catching knock of 102 which came from just 98 balls.

Bates was well-supported by Liam Dawson, who hit a useful 45 as he continued his recovery from a groin injury, and wicketkeeper-batsman Lewis McManus who continued his impressive form this season with 56 from just 58 balls.

Opening bowler George Edwards finished with figures of 4-52 for Surrey, but fluent lower order runs from Chris Wood (34) and Rimmington (32) helped the home side reach 309-7 off their 50 overs.

Oliver Batchelor (52) and Aneesh Kapil (68) hit half-centuries for the visitors in reply, but wickets fell at regular intervals as Rimmington was well supported by two wickets each for spinners Dawson (2-56) and Brad Taylor (2-44).

Seamers Chris Wood (1-41) and Tom Barber (1-37) also picked up a wicket each alongside a brilliant spell of death bowling from Rimmington as Surrey were dismissed for 253 to confirm the Hampshire victory.
