69 in just  46 balls from Liam Dawson was not enough to prevent the Hampshire Royals falling to a six wicket defeat to the Durham Dynamos in the Yorkshire Bank40 at the Emirates ICG.

Despite four wickets from Pakistani fast-bowler Sohail Tanvir (4-39) - his best performance in a Hampshire shirt to date - a second wicket partnership of 163 from Phil Mustard (92) and Steve Borthwick (80) saw Durham chase the revised target of 218 with 16 balls to spare.

Dawson's impressive knock, largely supported by Sean Ervine (33) had earlier helped the Royals post 224 for 9 off their 40 overs.

With just one point between the two teams at the top of table, this match had a lot a stake even at this half way stage in the competition. And it was Durham who had their tails up early when seamer Chris Rushworth (5-42) dismissed both openers to leave Hampshire 36-2 inside ten overs.

It certainly seemed like a wise decision from Durham captain Mark Stoneman to field first when Jimmy Adams (32) fell with the visitors on 112-4 with less than 15 overs left in their innings. However, a quite impressive knock from Dawson, who moved to his fifty in just 37 balls (4 Fours, 2 sixes), pushed the Royals past 200 – a score that perhaps looked out of reach at the half-way stage.

But it was Rushworth who got the last laugh as he dismissed Dawson and Chris Wood (0) in the last over to secure his second List A five-wicket haul of his career. The Royals however put on 96 runs in the last ten overs to finish on 224-9 off their 40 overs.

Sohail took a wicket in the first over of his debut for Hampshire earlier this month and he mirrored that in his game to hand the Royals a perfect start with the wicket of Stoneman to leave Durham 1-1.

However, with Sohail’s opening bowling partner Dimitri Mascarenhas not able to take to the  field to due to injury and a couple of half-chances going astray, the match quickly got away from the visitors.  Despite losing two overs to rain mid-way through the innings,   a partnership of 163 between Mustard and Borthwick for the second wicket put Durham in control.

And despite Durham closing in on the target, Sohail continued to look threatening with the ball and he was soon rewarded for his efforts. After dismissing Mustard and Borthwick, he then clean bowled Ben Stokes (3) to finish with his best figures for Hampshire since his arrival at the start of the month.

However, it was ex-England batsman Paul Collingwood (32*) who saw Durham over the line to secure the six wicket victory with 16 balls to spare.

Recent Form

The Royals are currently the team to beat in Group B with five wins out of six and two games in hand over Lancashire in second.

Michael Carberry, in particular, has been in excellent form for them with two fifties and a century in his last three YB40 matches. He’ll also be baying for blood in this match having fallen just four short of another ton in the reverse fixture in May.

Victories over the Saltires, Lancashire Lightning and Derbyshire in their last three outings make the Dynamos Hampshire’s biggest threat for top spot. Indeed, a victory for Durham would see them leap-frog the Royals at the summit.

Seamers Chris Rushworth and Graeme Onions have been the form pair in the List A format so far with 11 and 10 wickets respectively.
