Hayward Steers South Wilts to Twenty20 Crown
Jul 26 2013
South Wilts won the Southern Electric Premier League twenty20 cup after captain James Hayward hit a remarkable 130 from just 50 balls to lead his side to a 72-run victory over Burridge at The Ageas Bowl.
Opening the batting with wicketkeeper Tom Morton (33), the South Wilts skipper raced to his half-century of just 18 balls.
Well-supported by Ryan Burl (25) in the middle-order, Hayward brought up his century off 37 balls – his first t20 ton of his career as they eventually posted a mammoth 233-6 off their 20 overs.
It was a brave attempt from Burridge to chase the tough target but they finished on 161-9 with Derek Kenway hitting 43.
After the match winning skipper Hayward said: “What an opportunity for us as Club Cricketers to play at, in my opinion, one of the best County grounds in the UK. The guys were absolutely buzzing on the night and the pre-game nerves seemed to vanish once we got out there and started playing.
“The crowd were brilliant too, we had a good following down there so put in a performance like we did was great and they were right behind us all game, it certainly gets the adrenalin going when you hear their support."
