Worcestershire v Hampshire
LV= County Championship
Sunday 8– Weds 11 June (11:00am Start)
New Road

Summary: Hampshire trail Worcestershire by 392 runs with
nine wickets remaining in their first innings
Worcestershire: 402-9 (118 overs)
Hampshire: 10-1 (6 overs)
(Scorecard Below)

Worcestershire wicketkeeper Ben Cox’s (104) maiden First-Class century frustrated Hampshire on a rain-affected second day of the LV= County Championship match at New Road.

After losing the whole of the morning session because of rain, Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell picked up his first Championship wickets for Hampshire as Cox’s ton led the home side to 402-9 in the evening session.

Despite an early wicket, Jimmy Adams (4*) and Will Smith (6*) then negotiated the visitors to 10-1 at stumps in a tricky six over spell late in the day.

After an opening day which was largely affected by the rain, the last thing either side wanted was more rain on day two. However, this was exactly what happened as the whole of the morning session and an hour after lunch was lost to the weather.

When they two teams eventually made it out to the middle, it was the home side who made the stronger start as Alexei Kervezee (80) had his eye on a first century against Hampshire. However, a smart catch by James Vince gave James Tomlinson (2-66) his second wicket to end the batsman hopes.

But Worcestershire still found themselves in a strong position on 289-5 at tea with Ben Cox (104), Joe Leach (32) at the crease.

Despite an early wicket each for Matt Coles (2-73) and David Balcombe (3-53), it was an impressive knock from Cox who looked to have led the home side into a strong position. Maxwell’s first Championship wickets did then leave Worcestershire nine-wickets down, but Saeed Ajmal (24*) and  Charlie Morris (11*) led the home side to 402-9, leaving Hampshire six overs to bat until stumps.

Despite Jack Shantry (1-5) picking up a wicket with his first ball, Adams and Smith showed all their experience to lead Hampshire into day three on 10-1.

day One

Summary: Worcestershire lead Hampshire by 175 runs with
six wickets remaining in their first innings
Worcestershire: 175-4 (63 overs)
(Scorecard Below)

David Balcombe (2-26) took two wickets on his return to the side in a largely rain-affected opening day of the LV= County Championship match between Hampshire and Worcestershire at New Road.

The 29-year old picked up the wicket of home skipper Daryl Mitchell (12) early in the morning session. Fellow seamer James Tomlinson picked up his 23rd wicket of the season when he trapped Matthew Pardoe (21) lbw, but it was a steady start for the home side, who went into lunch on 85-2.

After a short rain delay early in the afternoon session, Balcombe picked up his second wicket of the day thanks to a smart catch at second slip from James Vince to dismiss 20-year old Tom Fell (19).

Ross Whiteley (18) was fresh from a match-winning knock for Worcestershire in the NatWest T20 Blast on Saturday, but he also fell in the afternoon session after Matt Coles (1-22) trapped him lbw.

However, a watchful half-century from Alexei Kervezee (65*) led the home side to 175-4 with only one over managed after tea because of the rain.
