Michael Alexander CARBERRY

Carberry-Whites-Bat-Yorkshire-RoseBowl-Zee-14-208“Carbs” is a left-hand opening batsman, outstanding fielder and occasional right-arm off-break bowler.

He was born in Croydon, Surrey and played for that county and Kent before joining Hampshire in 2006 when he was awarded his county cap.

He had previously played for England Under-19 at the World Cup in 2000 and went on to tour Bangladesh with England ‘A’ in 2007, play for England Lions in 2008, and was again selected for the England Performance Squad in 2009/10. He played in his one Test Match v Bangladesh at Chittagong in 2010.

Michael suffered a life-threatening illness during the winter of 2010 meaning he missed half the 2011 season. However, when he returned he more than made up for it!

Carberry combined with Neil McKenzie and Jimmy Adams to break not one but two Hampshire all-time wicket partnerships. He scored an unbeaten 300 and put on a massive 523 with the former  for the third wicket against Yorkshire at The Ageas Bowl (a score that also ranks as the ninth-highest partnership in the history of First-Class cricket and Hampshire's highest ever partnership score).

He followed that with a stand of 373 with Adams against Somerset at Taunton, surpassing a 90-year old second-wicket record on the way.

Despite further injuries in 2012 he finishing as top run-scorer in the Royals' triumphant 40-over campaign with 598 at an awesome average of 85.42 and continued his good form in limited overs cricket into 2013. In August he became only the third Hampshire player to record a Twenty20 century against Lancashire in the Friends Life t20 Quarter Final at The Ageas Bowl.

That earned him a call-up to England's International T20 squad for a two match Series which included an opening fixture on his home ground!
